Project #846

Revamping Rotary Rec Area 3

USA

District: 5490

Rotary Club: Kingman Route 66

24-Apr-10

Time: all day

Number of Volunteers Expected: 50

Location: Hualapai Mountain Park, Rec Area 3

Over 20 years ago, the clubs in the NW portion of D5490, banded together and using Rotary Labor and donated materials built a Recreation area in the Hualapai Mountains. Rising over 8,400 feet, the Hualapai Mountains are the Highest mountains in Northwest Arizona. The Hualapai Mountains near Kingman, Ariz., offer a beautiful forest setting all year for many recreational opportunities. Campers, picnickers, hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and off-pavement explorers enjoy their excursions into this high, pine-scented island surrounded by desert. They come in summer for cooler temperatures, in fall for the color, in winter for the snow and in spring for the wildflowers.

The 7 Rotary Clubs in the Northwestern portion of District 5490 along with the two visiting GSE teams will be working to improve the current condition of Rotary Rec Area 3 to a level consistent with the image that Rotary enjoys in this part of the world. This grant will improve the recreation site so that it is more desirable to use, safety will be improved with the addition of lighting and the installation of steel railings along some very treacherous areas. The many hundreds of people who use the recreation area each year will be able to once again use the volleyball court and horseshoe pits that have deteriorated to a level that makes their use impossible. Further, the kitchen facilities which are in a sad state of disrepair, will be modernized with the addition of a new stove, freezer, counters a commercial grade sink and flooring. Lastly, a poorly designed pit barbecue will be upgraded so that it will become functional and not merely a place to throw trash.
