AIDS Counselling And Testing

AllCountries in the District

District: 9200

Rotary Club: D9200

30-Apr-11

Time: All Day

Number of Volunteers Expected: 5000

Location: In All Clubs in the District

All the countries that constitute District 9200 have suffered from the scourge of HIV/AIDS. The virus has claimed millions of lives. In Kenya it is estimated that about one and a half million people are currently living with the HIV infection. The disease has created fear in our communities and stigmatized AIDS victims including the 1i.i% of children under the age of 15 who have lost one or both parents to the pandemic and have become AIDS Orphans. Of those infected only 16% had been tested for HIV/ AIDS. According to the 6th Report on AIDS in Ethiopia 1.267,000 people had died of AIDS by 2005 and it projected that by 2010 1.9 million deaths would be recorded. There were Ethiopian 744,100 AIDS Orphans. Yet only 5% of the population had been tested. Statistics for other countries in the District are also very dismal.

It is vital that people know their HIV status. Testing and counseling for HIV brings benefits to individuals and couples. Those who test negative can be counseled on ways to avoid getting infected. Those who test positive can be treated with anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs that prolong life.

DG Stephen Mwanje has chosen HIV Counseling and Testing as the District 9200 project for Rotarians at Work Day. The Day will be observed on 30th April 2011. The Rotarians for Fighting AIDS Action Group (RFFA) under the leadership of its founder, Rtn. Marion Bunch, will provide assistance as needed.
